ARTIST STATEMENT

THE LANGUAGE OF OBSERVATION

The world around us is filled with familiar things. We pass them every day without notice, convinced we already know what they are. My photography begins when that certainty disappears.

A dewdrop becomes a window into another world. Reflections create alternate realities. A flower petal becomes a landscape. Patterns in bark can suggest faces, places, and stories that exist only in the imagination. What first appears ordinary reveals something unexpected when viewed with patience and attention.

For me, photography is less about recording nature than exploring perception. The camera becomes a tool for discovery, inviting both photographer and viewer to look beyond the obvious and enter a momentary world of possibility.

My current photographs were taken close to home, in the garden, beside a stream, or along a familiar path. Yet my goal is not documentation. It is to reveal how easily the familiar can become extraordinary when we learn to see rather than simply look.

Through these images, I hope to encourage a brief pause, a second glance, and perhaps a renewed sense of wonder about the world that surrounds us every day.

Bill Boxer (b.1941-) is a Florida-based photographer whose work explores structure, light, and perception in natural environments. His ongoing project, Close to Home, reflects a commitment to creative practice through changing circumstances, emphasizing attention, restraint, and visual clarity.

CLOSE TO HOME

When the wider world became unavailable, a new world emerged. As age, life, and circumstance changed, staying engaged required an adjustment and closer attention. Close to Home was my transition. It became a new way of working, slowing down, finding new subjects, and seeing deeper. Circumstance does not have to close the door. It can open another.
